”Les Ribambeaux”

A piece for acoustic guitar dedicated to childhood

Why « Les Ribambeaux » ?

The title evokes a slice of my history.
In 2003 my daughter Noélie « found » a place in the parental nursery « La Ribambelle » located in Lyon, France.

The title « Les Ribambeaux » evokes all these children around us who played and twirled in carefreeness. The work oscillates between binary and ternary measures, very constructed rhythms and sudden escapes, very conventional-sounding harmonies and enriched chords, thus creating a musical metaphor between two opposing worlds with antagonistic rules.
The adult universe is in some way represented in the three-beat passages with conventional low chords often played in barred and that of childhood in the open and higher arpeggios.
In addition, this composition brings me back to the story of my own childhood, lived with a lot of freedom to begin with and in which the adult world came, as for everyone else, to interfere with its rules and duties, attempting its takeover of the living.

Finally, this approach echoes the theory of transactional analysis, a modern psychology movement that presents the personality arranged in a fragmentary structure notably composed of a child and a parent, sources of many internal conflicts in the psyche of the adult personality.

The cinematographic treatment of the pink/purple grass transports us into a world tinged with one of the favorite colors of childhood that remains in each of us despite certain torments sometimes, in our adult life.

Aframe cabins?
Indeed, I self-built the houses on the property where I live and work and I give you a preview in this video clip.
